Fraud is a very serious crime because it has the potetial to wipe out a person's life savings and destroy plans for his or her family's future. The law provides for both criminal punishment for the fraudster, and civil remedies for the victim. The distinguishing feature between fraud and say, simple breach of contract, is that at the time the contract was entered into, the breaching party intended to perform his or her obligations under the contract, whereas the fraudster never intended to.
